Questions To Ask Your Players As A DM

As a DM, it can be helpful to ask your players some questions before you jump head first into your campaign. I like to put these questions into three categories: Logistics, Character, and Campaign

I'll include some example questions that you can ask your players before the campaign begins.

Campaign Questions can be very generalized. These questions can help you get an idea as to what aspects of gameplay that your players like the most, along with any hard boundaries that your players may have.

What is your favorite part about playing D&D?

What is your least favorite part about playing D&D?

Are there any topics you want to specifically avoid or explore?

What kind of tones or themes would you like to be present or absent in the campaign?

Are there any house rules you particularly like or dislike?

Game Logistics: The most integral part of a campaign. You'll probably definitely be asking some of these questions after each individual session.

How often do you want to meet and for how long?

List all available days and times.

How do you think tardiness and absences should be handled?

Do you want optional days (one-shots) or breaks built into the schedule? How?

How much time are you willing and/or able to spend on the campaign between sessions? (leveling, side conversations, discussions with DM, reviewing notes, giving feedback, etc.)

Character Questions often cover things like combat and backstory integration.

What kind of combat roles are you interested in? (tank, melee damage, ranged damage, control, support, healing, etc.)

What kind of non-combat roles are you interested in? (socializing, scouting, surviving, thieving, utility, crafting, investigating, etc.)

How much effort do you want to put into creating your backstory and involving it in the narrative? (written length, detail of NPCs and locations, adding plot hooks, etc.)

Is there anything specific you do or don't want to have happen to your character? (transformations, relationships, conflicts, etc.)

Funny to change the dialogue so Archie is not as dismissive of women's athletics at the same time the uniform is recolored pink. To be sure, that change may come from laziness more than anything, as pink gets dumped all over.

The lone spectator that gets configured into something other than blue mass -- now dumped in with the rest. Just as well as it is not clear he is wearing pants.

i was talking to some people about how hard it was to get together with my friends due to scheduling conflict

and another friend of mine starts "yeah- it's impossible to schedule something with 10 people -"

and at that moment i realized i needed to clarify my friend group consists of 4

sometimes 5

I know! I made a Danny Phantom inspired character build around this! I was very excited to play him! And then he died less than 10 sessions in because he's an idiot. But that's TOA for ya

…Dannny Phantom fics often talk about Amity being chill with ghosts and whatnot, yet I don’t think I’ve ever really seen the logical conclusion of that:

Dying but just… keeping going.

A kid at Casper High dies in an accident and comes back in for class a few days later. Moves the memorial off their desk to make room for their notebook.

An elderly book club member shows up to the new meeting semi-transparent. They laugh off any concern with something along the lines of “At least my back pain’s gone!”

Someone calls in to their job like, “Hey, uh, I died. Does… does that mean I get the day off?”

No one quite knows how to react. Phantom shows up the first few times to ask if everything’s alright, but then starts to leaves them be.

It’s… fine?

At first, people very carefully walk on eggshells around the topic of death, but it gradually fades into the background. People just treat it as a new rule of polite conversation. The world goes on. It’s still just Amity Park, the most haunted city in America.

They’ll have to address it eventually, they know. It’s far too big not to. But for the moment, things just keep going as they were.

Even if the writers bring in a new LI for Buck, no one is ever gonna beat Tommy Kinard. Sorry! But just look at this material:

Tommy personally knows and respects the life of a firefighter and why it’s so important to Buck, something that Buck’s previous love interests found difficult to understand

Tommy can be involved in calls and can help the 118 in a way others can’t (as we’ve seen)

Even before dating Buck, Tommy had strong connections to the main characters — the most important people in Buck’s life

Buck himself said Tommy is his most transformative relationship since Abby (whom Tommy is also connected to)

Speaking of Abby, Buck pined for her, but it was clear that Abby was ready to move on when she left him. With Buck and Tommy, both of them want each other back. Neither is ready to move on. They pine for each other.

Tommy is one of the very few people who call Buck “Evan” and the only one to do so regularly and with such affection. It was only during the breakup that Tommy called him Buck. The worst day of Buck’s life was the day Tommy called him by the name everyone else uses for him. Because Tommy isn’t everyone else. And no one else will ever be Tommy to Evan.

Tommy was a part of the call that ended with Bobby’s death. Tommy was the only one who saw Buck’s grief after losing the person he considered his father. Tommy was a pall bearer and walked with the main characters at Bobby’s funeral.

Speaking of Bobby, Tommy is the only LI of Buck’s that Bobby approved of. The only one Bobby will ever approve of. Bobby knew Tommy and Tommy knew Bobby. Tommy was part of the 118 when Bobby began again. Tommy saved Bobby’s life before Buck met him.

It was Tommy’s decision to transfer that opened the spot at the 118 that changed Buck’s life.

Literally, Buck is the happiest he has ever been when he is with Tommy. He can be giggly during sex and hold funerals for dead cowboys. Buck smiles and looks at Tommy with so much affection. And Tommy shows up for Buck – whether it’s attending the hospital wedding after an exhausting shift or making sure he’s resting after he’s injured or cooking him a literal feast or stealing a helicopter.

Any LI after Tommy would pale in comparison. The writers will do what they will but … why even attempt to outdo this ... You simply can’t!

Lewis Pullman absolutely killed it as Sentry. However, I would have loved to see the alternate universe where Steven Yuen played Sentry specifically for the one moment where Bob goes "Is the blonde hair okay? I thought I liked it but now I'm having second thoughts."

A dark-haired guy being convinced to dye his hair bright blonde "for the publicity" is already wild, but an Asian guy being convinced to dye his hair blonde because it "looks more heroic" would have been on an entirely different level.
